Restorations

Restorations form a major part of our work here at Better Sounds.

Rather than just fixing a specific problem with an instrument, a Restoration involves an investigation and full rebuild of the instrument as a whole.  When cost is an issue, a minor restoration can be performed, with only critical areas attended to, but generally our preference (and the best result for you), is a complete restoration where all components of the instrument and finishing are overhauled.

All of our restoration work is performed on-site at our Factory, using modern techniques and equipment found only at the best of professional restoration factories worldwide.

As always, our guarantee to you is that our work will not de-value your instrument in any way.  This is particularly important for rare and valuable instruments, or those with particular sentimental value.

Depending on the state of the particular instrument, the following work may be involved:

A visual inspection of the instrument as a whole.  This involves looking beyond the obvious problems and symptoms, to discover all underlying issues and potential causes.
The value of the instrument is also assessed, taking into account rarity, sentimental value, and any custom modifications requested by the customer.
Complete disassembly of the instrument.  This allows a thorough clean, and better access to all areas within the instrument.
Removal of dents using a wide variety of toolings so that the exact right size and shape is used.
A variety of methods are used to restore worn or corroded parts such as valves and slides.  Valves are cleaned, trued, over-plated, then machined down to precise tolerances in conjunction with precision boring of the cylinders. This ensures they are a perfect fit.
After careful attention to preparation of the underlying surface, an instrument can be resprayed or replated.
The finish is manually buffered and polished.
Final checks on alignment and adjustments are performed.
After final inspections and testing, the restored instrument is given a final clean, sealed in plastic and boxed for collection or delivery.
